How Does PRP Treatment Work?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment has become popular for orthopedic and sports-related injuries, and PRP treatment is used in various medical fields to increase the rate of healing in patients and prevent the need for more radical or invasive treatment. Although there are several scientific research studies to back this ortho-biologic treatment, not many people understand how the treatment actually works. Continue reading to learn more.
Overview of PRP treatment
Plasma is the liquid portion of the blood that consists of mostly water and protein. It allows red and white blood cells and platelets to move through the bloodstream. Platelets are the cells that allow blood clotting. They also play a part in healing. Plate-rich plasma is basically blood plasma that contains a high concentration of platelets. The doctor can use PRP to treat injuries or damages to the muscles, joints and skin.
To produce the PRP used for treatment, the doctor will take a small portion of the patient’s blood. Afterward, the entire blood is separated in a centrifuge to isolate the white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The platelet and white cell layer are then separated and centrifuged again to separate the platelets. Finally, a small quantity of plasma is added to the platelets to form the injectable PRP.
The method of using the PRP depends on the specific application. For sports medicine and orthopedic treatments, the doctor will inject the PRP into the affected area, based on the type of injury or damage. The doctor can use live, real-time ultrasonic or fluoroscopic imagery (that allows them to see inside the body) to guide the injection procedure and ensure that the PRP is delivered to the proper location.
How PRP treatment promotes healing
Platelets have up to 30 bioactive proteins that contribute to healing in human body tissues. Also, they produce seven protein growth factors that stimulate the process of wound healing. Finally, PRP has three kinds of proteins that allow cells to bind to each other, another crucial healing process.
The different processes used by PRP treatment to trigger healing are highly complex. Simply put, PRP injections activate the normal body’s healing processes, but multiplied several times over. For instance, platelets inhibit inflammation cells and promote cellular growth, while growth factors initiate the healing of bone and soft tissue.
Applications of PRP treatment
PRP injections are used to treat tendonitis, torn tendons, arthritis-related pain, muscle injuries and joint injuries. They are fast becoming common for cosmetic procedures and sexual wellness as well. For instance, dermatologists and hair replacement professionals use PRP injections to treat a form of hair loss called androgenic alopecia, or male or female pattern baldness. Also, the treatment is available for the face, via a procedure called “vampire facial.”
The bottom line
More research work is required to determine the full effectiveness of PRP treatment. So far, it has been proven to enhance healing after injury or surgery. It may take several weeks for the effects of the procedure to become noticeable. Book an appointment with the wellness center to learn more about PRP injections.
