Neuropathy: Healing Nerve Damage With Regenerative Medicine

Neuropathy Hillsboro, OH

Neuropathy can be debilitating, impacting even your day-to-day life. The symptoms can make everyday tasks difficult to complete, from standing and walking to using fine motor skills (such as buttoning up a shirt). At Restoration Wellness, we help people find relief from neuropathic pain through regenerative medicine.

Understanding peripheral neuropathy and its causes

Peripheral neuropathy, often referred to as simply “neuropathy,” occurs when there is damage to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. These are the peripheral nerves. Symptoms include pain, muscle weakness, balance problems, lack of coordination, and numbness or tingling. Neuropathy is most common in the hands, feet, and legs.

Nerve damage is the primary cause of neuropathy. However, there are other causes. Some of the most common are:

  • Diabetes
  • Infection
  • Toxic exposure
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Metabolic issues

The good news is that damaged nerves can heal. However, for treatment to be effective, it must address the cause, not only the symptoms. One way to achieve this is through regenerative medicine.

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a developing medical field that aims to harness the body’s ability to heal itself. For instance, the body can usually heal without external help if there is a cut. Examples include stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, and gene therapy. However, for neuropathy, our team may recommend the following regenerative treatments:

Electromagnetic infrared therapy

Electromagnetic infrared therapy is a regenerative treatment method that utilizes low-level light therapy, or “LLLT,” to promote the growth of new blood vessels. Known as angiogenesis, blood vessel growth is needed to repair damaged nerves. The blood vessels must grow around the peripheral nerves to repair them successfully.

Electrostimulation

Electrostimulation promotes peripheral nerve growth with digital electrotherapeutic stimulation. The Cancer Centers of America also uses this approach to assist patients with rebuilding nerves during chemotherapy. This type of regenerative medicine can result in fast pain relief. It has the added benefit of being something the patient can do at home; patients do not have to travel to our office every time they need to undergo electrostimulation.

Advanced nutrition therapy

Nutrition is the key to healing. The body has a hard time recovering from any condition if there is a lack of nutrients. Advanced nutrition therapy aims to accelerate healing by ensuring the patient gets the necessary nutrients. It also works to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, once again promoting better healing. This treatment is meant to be administered with either electromagnetic, infrared therapy or electrostimulation as a bolster.

In-clinic visits can boost regenerative medicine

Visiting the clinic once a week can help ensure regenerative treatments are working as intended. This will be the time to bring up any symptoms or side effects, track improvements, and make adjustments. It is important not to skip these routine checkups, as adjustments may reduce symptoms or quicken the pace of the treatment.
