Shoulder Pain Treatment Hillsboro, OH
Shoulder pain treatment can help relieve pain and sensitivity associated with many conditions of the shoulders. The shoulders are the largest movable joint in our bodies with the greatest range of motion. This is due to the four muscles and tendons that make up the shoulder joint. However, pain and reduced range of motion can result when an injury, swelling, damage, or bone changes occur.
Shoulder pain treatment is available at Restoration Wellness in Hillsboro and the surrounding area. Our team can properly diagnose your condition and discuss treatment options that work for you and your current health. Understanding Shoulder Pain
The shoulder is made up of three bones: the upper arm bone (humerus), the shoulder blade (scapula), and the collarbone (clavicle). The upper arm bone lies inside a rounded socket, called the glenoid, in the shoulder blade. Four muscles and tendons, called the rotator cuff, hold the arm in place and reside in the shoulder socket.
There are several types of shoulder pain, including bursitis, tendinitis, tendon tears, impingement, instability, arthritis, and fractures. Bursitis occurs from excessive use of the shoulders that results in inflammation and swelling of the bursa. Tendinitis refers to acute or chronic inflammation of the tendons. Injuries and degenerative changes in the tendons can result in the splitting or tearing of the tendons. Shoulder impingement occurs when the top part of the shoulder joint rubs onto the lower part. Shoulder instability, or dislocation, refers to when the head of the upper arm leaves the socket. Arthritis in the shoulder most often occurs due to wear and tear of the upper arm or shoulder or from an injury. Lastly, fractures refer to a broken clavicle, humerus, or scapula.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can occur from a wide variety of causes. The most common cause is bursitis or tendinitis, in which the rotator cuff tendons become inflamed or damaged due to being trapped under the bony area in the shoulder. Other causes of shoulder pain include, but are not limited to:
- Arthritis in the shoulder joint
- Bone spurs in the shoulder area
- Broken shoulder bone
- Bursitis (bursa normally protects the joint and helps it move easily)
- Dislocation of the shoulder
- Frozen shoulder (occurs when the muscles, tendons, and ligaments inside the shoulder become stiff, making movement difficult and painful)
- Overuse or injury of nearby tendons, such as the bicep muscles of the arms
- Poor shoulder posture and mechanics
- Shoulder separation
- Tears of the rotator cuff tendons

Diagnosing Shoulder Pain
To properly diagnose shoulder pain, a physician may conduct a physical examination and run imaging tests, such as an X-ray and MRI. In most cases, the patient is referred to a chiropractor. They will then undergo a physical examination, imaging tests, and a medical history. We typically examine the patient on their first visit to help speed up the treatment process.
We will first take a look at the shoulder or shoulders causing pain, examine the imaging tests, and ask the patient a series of questions. It is important to try and remember the source of the pain, when it started, and how often or when the pain feels the worst. We will try to move the arm around and determine the shoulder’s range of motion. Once a likely cause has been established, we will discuss the patient’s treatment options and prescribe pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications as needed.

Chiropractic Treatments for Shoulder Pain
Patients experiencing a lack of range of motion, shoulder pain or sensitivity, or pain when reaching for something should seek immediate chiropractic care. A chiropractor specializes in the treatment of the joints, not only the spine. Chiropractors can help ease shoulder pain through alignment, myofascial release, the Graston technique, ultrasound, and electric stimulation.
By improving or correcting the alignment of the clavicle, shoulder, and scapula, we can reduce the stress placed on certain sensitive tendons that may be trapped or dislocated. Myofascial release is a form of therapy that relaxes tense muscles and releases the fascia, or thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds the shoulder’s muscle. The Graston technique involves breaking up the scar tissue and adhesions limiting motion. Finally, electric stimulation (e-Stim) is a method of sending electric shocks to relieve pain and relax the muscles. Depending on the cause of the patient’s shoulder pain, we may use one or a combination of these treatments.

What to Expect After Shoulder Pain Treatment
In most cases, shoulder pain treatment may require the use of a sling or shoulder immobilizer for a few weeks. Some patients may also need to undergo physical or occupational therapy. The number of sessions needed will depend on the cause of pain and the type of treatment administered. We may prescribe pain relievers, antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), or corticosteroid medications to help ease pain and help the shoulder heal after treatment.
We recommend patients rest for several days after their first treatment. If the patient is undergoing long-term or ongoing treatment, it is best to rest a full day after each session. It is important to limit or temporarily eliminate stretching, overhead work, and any activities involving great use of the shoulders. Lastly, patients can use an ice pack or cold compress for temporary relief while still taking medications as directed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What are the causes of shoulder pain?
A. Shoulder pain generally occurs due to an injury, damage, wear-and-tear, or degenerative disease. The main causes of shoulder pain are bursitis, tendinitis, tendon tears, impingement, instability or dislocation, arthritis, and fractures. Properly diagnosing the cause of the pain helps determine the best course of treatment.
Q. How long does shoulder pain treatment usually take?
A. The duration and number of sessions largely depend on the type of treatment a patient undergoes. Minor shoulder pain can generally be treated with over-the-counter medications and ice packs. However, more serious conditions can take eight weeks or longer to fully heal. This will be discussed upon initial diagnosis.
Q. What treatments are available for shoulder pain?
A. A variety of treatments are available depending on the type and cause of shoulder pain. Chiropractors can treat shoulder pain through alignment, myofascial release, the Graston technique, ultrasound, and electric stimulation. They can also prescribe medications and refer patients to specialists if surgery is needed.
Q. What kinds of medication can I take to relieve shoulder pain?
A. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) help relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Over-the-counter medications for pain relief include acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve). We recommend using an ice pack as well to relieve tense muscles.
Q. What are the most common symptoms of a shoulder condition?
A. Symptoms of a shoulder condition differ depending on the type of condition a patient has. It is important to seek medical attention if you are experiencing immobility in the shoulder, a shoulder joint that looks deformed, intense pain, a swollen or inflamed shoulder, or weak or numb arms and hands.
